~ Building Low Cost Homes Out of Reclaimed Materials ~
"Beacon of Light Award" ~ January 2010

I recently saw a segment on the national news about this organization, and was amazed.  Dan and his wife, Marsha Phillips, of Huntsville Texas have founded a wonderfully sustainable organization ~ building unique and beautiful low-cost homes ~ all made from reclaimed materials!

What are reclaimed materials you may ask?  Well, think about if and when you have ever remodeled a room or a home, or saw one being remodeled ~ where do all the old cabinets go?  Or the old paneling?  Usually to a land fill.  Not very practical nor is it environmentally friendly.  Dan and Marsha, master craftsmen themselves, take donations of these still wonderful materials, refinish, repaint, and re-use them in homes of their own design and creation.

I was so impressed with the short segment I viewed, I sought Dan and Marsha out, and saw more of their amazing work on their website.  As Dan so succinctly stated (and I'm paraphrasing here), "...do we really need more 3,000 square foot houses sitting empty because they are not affordable..."  Hence his organization, Phoenix Commotion!

The NIC is proud to bestow our first "Beacon of Light" Award for the year 2010 to Dan and Marsha Phillips for their spiritual, loving work ~ not only to bring affordable and beautiful housing to the market, but also for their insight and care for our environment, using discarded but still usable materials to do so.  I invite you to visit them ~ send them your highest thoughts ~ and donate your re-usable items for their wonderful work!
